Creative Ways To Spend Your Free-Time

Do you need a little creative inspiration? Here are 7 creative ways to spend your free-time. Creativity is an important part of human nature! It gives us the opportunity to think differently, try new ideas, and develop our creative problem-solving skills. It helps us to destress, unwind, and find peace of mind. Many people use creativity as a form of self expression, to explore emotions, and express feelings.

Living a creative lifestyle has many benefits on our day to day life, and has even shown to increase our lifespan. It has also never been easier to live a creative lifestyle than it is today!

  1. Learn a craft

Grab the yarn! Learn to knit, crochet, or even macrame. With the rise of the internet, there’s lots of free how-to videos available online to learn a new craft. Try YouTube, or Skillshare to find creative classes that suit you. Once you’ve learnt your craft, you can even sit on the sofa and watch your box set as you knit away. Scarves for Christmas, anyone?

  1. Take up an instrument

Have you always wanted to play the piano, bang the drums, or learn the sax? Just like learning a craft, you can start to learn an instrument today! Find a music teacher near you, or use an online tutor and you’ll be a talented musician in no time. I’m sure the neighbours won’t mind the noise!

  1. Cook something new

We eat everyday, so why not add some creativity to the kitchen! Find yourself a bold new recipe, or perhaps an old one you’ve always wanted to try. Creativity is all about making and doing, and cooking can be a source of creativity in your life too. Pinterest is a great place to find interesting recipe ideas, and you can treat yourself to a new recipe book. Go outside your comfort zone, and create a dish you never thought you could. Why not invite some friends over to try your creative dish?

  1. Creative writing

Are you a poet, and you didn’t know it? Have you got an interesting story waiting to be told? Grab a pen and paper and bring the page to life with words. Try writing a daily journal. Write your dreams. Try Julia Cameron’s ‘Morning Pages’- three pages of longhand, stream of consciousness writing,

done first thing in the morning. They are about anything and everything that crosses your mind– and they are for your eyes only. Morning Pages provoke, clarify, comfort, cajole, prioritize and synchronize the day at hand.

Don’t worry about your writing being “good”. Ralph Waldo Emerson said “Every artist was first an amateur.”

  1. Doodle in a colouring book

Did you know that you can buy colouring books with geometric and floral designs for adults? They’re a fantastic way to de-stress after a long day at work. They’re also simple enough to pick up at any time. Relieve stress and anxiety through colour!

  1. Creative photography

Pick up your smartphone, or an old camera and start taking creative snaps. You can get colourful photos of flowers from your garden, smiling portraits of the family, or experiment with arty abstract shots. Share your creative snaps on Instagram and Facebook for family and friends to enjoy.
